PostSubject: Places to put on our wish list   Places to put on our wish list Icon_minitimeSat Jun 23, 2007 6:38 am

So we're supposed to start thinking of places we'd like to live for our "wish list". Domestic is fine, but personally I think we'd both like foreign. Since our kids will be little it will be an easier adjustment and it would be a really awesome opportunity to live somewhere foreign. And we dont have a lot of furniture or nice things so we could probably move most everything. and it wouldnt be a terrible loss if we couldnt (although i really want my couches and cribs!!) We've always thought about maybe living abroad, but financially we could never afford it and I dont want to get too settled anywhere before i get that opportunity.

Yet I dont know much about foreign living since I havent ever done it. So I dont know if it would be miserable or enjoyable or what. I have a problem with glamorizing locations and then getting a little disappointed when I arrive lol.

Here's the places we're considering and why. I've taken 4 semester of college German and have a decent grasp of the language and culture. I've also taken some Japanese culture courses in college, and have a good understanding of certain aspects of the history/culture since some of my family is from there. Eric can speak some Japanese (two years HS) and likes the culture too. I've also had some studying of Italy and think it's pretty charming, although most my studies were around southern Italy and the only Army location in northern.

Foreign:
Germany (there are like 6, but i dont know much about the locales), Italy, Japan (both. . . although Tokyo is cold it has its perks, aka DISNEYLAND lol; but both my parents lived in Okinawa before and my brother served his mission in southern japan--fukuoka, where i actually have family living there)

Domestic:
Georgia (like Fort McPherson/atl area), Fort Irwin CA, Fort Knox KY and Fort Buchanan (puerto rico Smile )

our issues:
i dont want to really live anywhere where i'm going to DIE from some crazy butt typhoon or soemthing or a plague. I dont like the idea of Germany fully cause i hear it's pretty dirty (like people will take a piss on the street). . . and that there can be lots of pornographic materials that are rather public.

any suggestions or thoughts? what's your experience?? thanks!

Don't send him to Germany. The Base at Weisbaden is sending all of their soldiers to Baumholder, and the soldiers at Baumholder are deploying. Most places in Europe, in my experience smell like shizzy!
And Georgia sucks. Seen more dead animals in my six months here than I have in my previous 19 years living ANYWHERE else. I hate the south, and southerners can't drive. And they kill animals. Hopeless.

However, if you go to Japan....

dont go germany, i hear horror stories bout germany.... if at all possible take japan, it isn't that cold.... yeah it snows, but it is beautiful... and we have heating on base... typhoons aren't as bad as they make em seem.... and tsunamis are rare.... of course they have evac plans for those of us who are sofa members... so we will be assisted, but we haven't had to use them once in the last two years....as for the other places.... i would prefer CA!!! yeah we dont want to put places on our wishlist that are high demand like CA too much cause we're afraid we wouldnt get it anyway and kind of throw our wish away. I mean i'd rather put KY on there adn KNOW i was getting it than put CA and then end up with TX. affraid

Oh but Japan. I could really dig that. I studied some Japanese culture stuff in college adn loved it. Especially religion, music, history, stuff like that. way rad stuff. And eric knows a little and i know like the parts of your face LOL. i would just love it there. I wish we had a dreamy smilie. so appropriate.

and . . . DISNEYLAND that's like the perk of a lifetime. ahhh disneyland. I would get a yearly pass and move in. lol.
